Colorful Pearls

Discover the natural beauty of colorful pearls – Freshwater pearls come in a wide range of natural hues—from luminous white with shimmering overtones to shades of purple, peach, and even rare metallic greens and blues. These are not dyed or treated; they grow naturally in freshwater mussels.

GUILD, one of the world’s most respected authorities in gem identification and jewelry grading, has developed an official naming system for these colors. Names like Aurora, Stardust Purple, Sunrise, and Silver Blush capture the dreamy, romantic tones of natural pearls.

What Makes Our Colorful Pearls Special

This collection features cultured freshwater pearls with natural colors. They are 100% untreated, with no artificial enhancements. Their shimmer is born from within, layer by layer of nacre. Unlike dyed or artificially treated pearls, these pearls develop their unique shades organically.

💡 Tip: To tell if your colorful pearls are natural, gently scrape for pearl powder. Natural pearls always produce white powder regardless of color. If the powder itself is tinted, the pearl is likely dyed.

According to the GIA Pearl Quality Factors, luster and overtone are the primary signs of quality. We only select untreated pearls with high luster and rich overtones.

The Natural Journey of Colorful Pearls

Pearls are organic gemstones, meaning their pigments may shift or soften over time. Just as many colored gemstones fade under direct sunlight or heat, natural pearls can also change. Research (including GIA testing) shows that untreated purple pearls may gradually shift from deep violet to lighter lavender. Many collectors embrace this gentle transformation as part of the pearl’s life story.

Because freshwater pearls have less dense nacre than saltwater pearls, their overtones can be more sensitive to the environment. Still, they remain elegant and unique throughout their journey. For this reason, we don’t recommend paying extremely high prices for colorful pearls, such as Edison pearls priced to rival Tahitians.

Metallic Luster & Selection

Pearls with metallic overtones are the least likely to shift colors, as the pigments adhere more tightly to the nacre layers. These are also the most valuable colorful pearls in today’s market. We prioritize these rare metallic pearls in our selection.

To keep prices affordable, some pearls may have small imperfections on the side or back. We hope pearl lovers can accept these natural marks in exchange for rare, untreated beauty.

Stabilized, Ready-to-Wear Pearls

Pearl specialists note that, most color settling happens in the first months after a pearl leaves its shell. To give you peace of mind, we store our naturally colored pearls for over one year before setting them into jewelry. Only those with stable, lasting color make it into our designs. We hope this help minimize the color shifting possibilities when they are in your hands.

Caring for Colorful Pearls

We believe in being transparent so you know what to expect. We also want to reassure you: colorful pearls remain beautiful over time, whether vivid or softened. They carry a charm that classic white pearls cannot offer. To extend their beauty:

  • Avoid prolonged direct sunlight.

  • Keep away from heat exposure.

  • Wear them often—your skin’s natural oils help preserve their luster.

If you love color but cannot accept natural fading, high-tech treated pearls exist (e.g., irradiated pearls where the nucleus color is altered). These pearls retain their color indefinitely, but lack the lively overtones of natural pearls. For this reason, we do not use treated pearls in our collection.
